I am a Twitter Believer.  I love the little bird and enjoy the banter that goes on throughout the day on the number of sites that I follow and manage.

Regularly, people ask my why I love twitter and then, with hardly even waiting for me to reply they go into why they don’t have time for twitter and how they couldn’t possibly manage even one more thing online.  As it is they had 23 spam emails in their inbox that morning.

BRIEF PRO-TIP: You do not have to read every email that comes into your inbox.  It is ok to trash “spam” without reading.  But that is another story for another day.

Today I am celebrating the power of Twitter.  I was on facebook and saw that a friend of mine was having trouble with an insurance company over a small claim that they wanted to file – what they were being told is that if they do file the claim they may be able to recoup their loss but then their premium would go up almost twice as much as the amount of money they recovered.  They were having no luck getting through to the insurance company to talk to anyone who could explain this to them or help them with their claim.  They had spent hours on it already.

So, I sent them a message and suggested that they Tweet about their woes and I would retweet the message.  The next day my friend posted a tweet about the situation using the company’s twitter name in the post (perfect).  I retweeted and several people retweeted off of my RT.  That is how Twitter works.

Within 48 hours my friend had heard from the Insurance company and they are now working together to get this resolved.

The situation is not entirely resolved yet but at the very least my friend was able to get the attention of the company and have them come directly to him instead of my friend continuing on hold for hour after hour.

We’ll keep you posted.

The Web 2.0 world is a wonderful thing. One of my favorite sites is Twitter. The great thing about it is the ability to connect with people all over the world with similar interests that I would have never found otherwise.

The second thing I love about Twitter is immediate feedback – the immediate gratification. There have been a number of times when I have posted something to my blog that I thought was absolutely brilliant. Then I go to twitter and I can almost hear the crickets chirping it is so quiet.

Then I’ll post something that I think is interesting and I am excited about but the post itself was put together very quickly. And all of a sudden will hear from folks on Twitter that I have hit the mark. So, it is a good way to gauge whether or not what I am posting is connecting with anyone out there.

It is also a great way for companies to stay in touch with what their customers are thinking. The search feature allows companies to determine quickly if there is good spin or bad buzz whirling around about a product or promotion of theirs.

The very most fun thing is when I find other people who are also upbeat and excited about life. It helps if they have a fondness for Haiku’s too.

POST SCRIPT

I’m not the only one who loves Twitter. I had written this post and went on twitter only to be sent this link to another article about how much we love twitter. READ THE ARTICLE HERE.

What a fun week ahead. I’ll be at a Mom Blogger event at Build-a-Bear Headquarters talking to the Moms about connecting with your kids. Can hardly wait to catch up with the awesome team at BABW and to meet all the awesome Mom Bloggerettes who will be there.

Meanwhile, a couple of states away, our roving reporter Carissa Rogers (or so I have newly dubbed her because she will be my eyes and ears in Utah this week), will be tweeting her way through the EVO conference in Park City. Our friend @thinkmaya is scheduled to be one of the speakers there.

And then swing back over to the East Coast and Parry Aftab will be in DC helping make the Internet a safer place for our kids. (Be sure and check out her newly updated website too! http://www.aftab.com)

Lots going on this week: so follow the tweets

Ok so I love Twitter.  It’s true.

First of all, thank you to everyone who is following because I don’t really feel like I have even hit my groove yet.   I have a Twitter account for my websites and those tweets come easy because they are very niche – but when it comes to my twitter site my tweets are all over the place.  But hang in there with me because it seems like I am getting the swing of this twitter thing.

So yesterday in a sort of silly mood after a long day of relating to people only virtually, I came down pretty hard on the needy tweeters.  Those people who ask “please retweet me”.  Of course we’ll retweet – that’s what we do. Tweet, Lather, Retweet.  We hop on our Tweet decks and check out what everyone else is tweeting and what is being retweeted.  It is really one of the most fun ways online right now to see what the real buzz is.

The only thing is a tweet is only 140 characters long. And those little tweets can pop out pretty quickly and then you hit update and it’s on it’s way.  There are ways to take it back but once you hit update it’s out there.  By the time you have had a chance to take a look at a tweet and rethink it – 50 people have already viewed that tweet.

If studies on twitter habits are true then about 10% of the registered tweeters make up about 90% of all tweets.  And like the Nintendo wii our twitter accounts sit there lonely and unused after about about a month – once the novelty has worn off.  So, I don’t want to discourage any active tweeters even if I do think your request for a retweet is a little silly.  ( Actually, I get more retweets by using words like BEWARE – and DANGER than I do by asking people to retweet )

So, I apologize to anyone who may have taken offense to my needy tweeter remarks.  I don’t really think you are being too needy pleading for retweets – well, not too needy – maybe just a little needy -  and I will retweet your post.
